about

Amorphous and polyrhythmic techno pallette from UMFANG aka Emma Olson, a NYC producer and Discwoman affiliate. Influenced by latin drum patterns, dj breaks and minimal percussion. “Ok”, her second release, is experimental edged and fervent in its constant cycle of rhythmic ‘eureka’ moments and subtle incorporations of simple melodies and textures, with aims of shaping techno into approachable, unstuffy music made for everyone.

The 48-minute release leaves her previous MPC and Volca beats in the dust with the acquisition of a BOSS Dr. 202 (from Octo Octa,) that forms the backbone of “Ok” around which a range of spaced out samples orbit. Outros, intros, vocal bits and spacey synth sounds looped from old trance records mesh with the looser and livelier Bachata and Cumbia influenced rhythms to create a distinctly warm sparseness.

Olson views this release as essentially an album of DJ tools, jacked on repetitions, mechanic grooves and a pallette of straightforward and sci-fi tinged sounds that essentially go very hard without obsessing over production. The resulting heavy club sonics are super live, get super weird, and draw you in to an introspective dance floor.
