Michael Feihstel As 1080p as they come - a very exemplary release from the canadian label. And that's a compliment. Favorite track: Pass Groove.

Yiannis Nova Dorakis Elka seems so drenched in the gritty influence of the classic Detroit techno and Chicago house fields and stands so comfortable on his timeless palette of sound like only a producer who is thirty years in the game. Tell it charisma or talent, Elan Benaroch keeps the energy in the whole album on a level where the catchy mellow pads, the deep and luscious arrangements live together with more crispy, wicked and funky moments, resulting harmonious, sophisticated ''Chants''.

Niccolo Brown Now this is the sort of house that really floats my boat. "Chants" might, perhaps out of financial necessity, been created from an assortment of outmoded studio arcana, but it's genuine artisanal dance fare, expertly designed by a producer with the rare skills of knowing precisely when to alter the mood from melancholy to uplifting and never allowing a track to outstay its welcome. If it's the conformist, production line gloss of an average club tune you're after; something that moves the feet but never the mind, then look elsewhere. Me, I like my house unpasteurised so Elka gets my vote every time. Favorite track: Home Alone.

about

Full-length cassette of introvert house from Vancouver producer Elka aka Elan Benaroch (or as "ESB") with far away vibes and a mystic touch to sequencing on “Chants”, the debut album under this moniker.

Elka drifts with polyphonics, grumpy beatboxes, tape echoes, relic rackmounts and analog tape to combine solid drum machine rhythms and emotional atmospheres, finding a woozy calm through classic house construction, detroit and melodic techno cues.

Beneath the sub aquatic pads and harmonic layering there’s a definite wistful/hopeful coloration to “Chants”, especially honing into feelings of travel/motion. Recorded over the last year in his studio on East Hastings, an isolated subterranean alcove where obsolete electronics continue to serve purpose, and provide a perhaps unintentional nostalgia to the package.
